Referee Certification Courses

  • How old do I have to be?

    For Rec Referees:

    While we always encourage the track below as it gets you the most exposure. Plymouth Soccer will allow anyone turning 12 during the current soccer season to begin their journey. 


    In partnership with EWSL, Plymouth Soccer hosts regular training courses for new referees of all ages. This course gets you some exposure but no certification. 


    For Certifired Referees:

    Anyone 13 years or older can sign up to take the online referee course.  This course will teach you the basics of becoming a soccer referee and prepare you to officiate lower-level games such as youth recreation, club, middle school and junior varsity matches in your community.

  • Uniform and equipment needed.

    To referee a match, you will be required to wear a sanctioned uniform and have the right gear.  Each state is different but generally, this includes:


    Uniform:

    Basic yellow referee shirt

    Black shorts

    Black knee / soccer socks

    Comfortable running shoes or cleats


    Equipment:

    Digital Watch

    Whistle

    Small notebook

    Coin (for flipping)

    Red / Yellow cards
